Yamilet, Volare's hostess and sometimes-cook, knows traditional foods plus some American favorites. Let us know and dietary restrictions (from vegan to vegetarian to a healthy mixture) and tell us your preferences for what main dish you want. Based on what you request Yamilet will decide what to cook and buy ingredients.

Volare serves FAMILY STYLE. This means everyone will be served the same selection, so it is wise to consult everyone before requesting a meal.

Let us know at least the day before what meals you will want for the following day so we can shop in Turrialba.

Pack a picnic

Yamilet can pack a picnic lunch. Fill an ice chest with finger eating food, your favorite drinks, fruits and salty snacks. She'll pack a bag with towels and tablecloth, utensils and plates, condiments. It's healthy and fun when you want to explore away from restaurants, "moda Tica".

Fresh!

90% of our ingredients come from within 100 miles of Volare. Costa Rica has fresh fish from both coasts plus freshwater trout and tilapia. Beef is all grass fed (tougher than American beef, but in many cuts it is more flavorful). Queso Turrialba is the local specialty -- a fresh white young cheese, similar to Greek Saganaki

Vegan or vegetarian or gluten free or kosher cuisine - let us know. Much of Costa Rica's diet is based on rice, beans, corn meal, eggs, cheese, yucca, and loads of fresh fruits. Gallo Pinto, Pico de Gallo, Tortillas de Queso, Crema de Pejebeye are daily favorites.

While Volare is not a restaurant, it does offer advantages for dining here.

Within walking distance of Volare

Above Volare 500 meters/yards is La Cabaña, which we do NOT recommend because of previous guests' comments. Above that restaurant is Carnes Channi, which is popular for very "typical" Costa Rica country food: chicharrones, pozól, pinchos. Plus ... Channi is a good friend of mine -- he helped build Volare (and I taught him to drive a car).

A small supermarket is 100 yards above Volare. Really basic, eggs, milk, sugar etc. but no fresh meats, fruits, vegetables. Salty snacks, soft drinks, canned peas. No frozen foods.

Restaurants and Supermarkets in Turrialba

Our two favorites are Don Porfi, 4 KM/3Miles below Volare, and Rio, 6 KM/4.5 miles below Volare (just before the bridge). We usually have menus of these restaurants in Volare.

Supermarket in Turrialba - there are several, with decent selections of meats, fish, chicken, canned goods, but not fresh breads or exotic vegetables. My favorite is Ultimo Diboyco, which you can find in Google Maps.
